Abstract

1,255,542. Transistor oscillators; pulse generators. BENDIX CORP. 15 April, 1969 [24 April, 1968], No. 19171/69. Headings H3P and H3T. A pulse generator has the collector-emitter path of a transistor 11 in series with the primary 12 of a transformer 14, whose secondary 26 feeds a load through a diode 28 which conducts when the transistor is off and does not conduct when the transistor is on, and whose tertiary 19 is connected between the base and a point in a base bias circuit connected across the supply 10, that portion of the bias circuit between the said point and the low voltage terminal of the supply including a resistor 24 connected to the anode of a diode 22 across which is connected further circuit means such as a diode 23. The resistor 24 is small compared with a resistor 20 completing the bias circuit, and is variable to adjust the output power of the generator. The diode 22 is of silicon with a negative temperature coefficient, and improves starting of the oscillations. The diode 23 provides base current during the " on " period. The load connected to diode 28 includes capacitor 34 and a control spark gap 29 which breaks down at a certain voltage discharging C34 and supplying a pulse to a step-up transformer 30 whose secondary 32 drives a spark gap 33 for ignition in an i.c. engine. A diode 21 protects the e-b junction. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the primary (44) is in the emitter circuit, the transistor operating in grounded collector mode. The base bias circuit again has parallel oppositely poled diodes (47, 48) in series with a poweradjusting variable resistor (50) between the tertiary and the emitter; a resistor (46) is connected between the diodes and the positive supply. A diode (52) again protects the e-b junction, and a Zener diode (53) in series with another diode (54) provides a constant base potential if the supply voltage should vary. The secondary and load circuit is similar. A pulse suppression filter (37, 39, 40) is connected across the supply, and this may be included in the first embodiment.
