Abstract
1,239,235. Variable resistors. NIPPON KOGAKU K.K. 24 Oct., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 50558/68. Heading H1S. A variable resistor for use in measuring instruments comprises an insulating plate 1 on which is formed a lower layer of a base metal for example chrome, titanium, manganese, beryllium, tantalum or nickel or an alloy thereof and an upper layer of palladium film on which a sliding contact 4 for example a phosphor bronze wire is engaged. Alternatively a further film of the base metal mixed with palladium may be sandwiched between the upper and lower layer so as to gradually reduce the concentration of palladium from the upper surface and hence achieve a reduced temperature coefficient of resistivity. The films are deposited by sputtering, and the shape of the films can be adjusted to achieve the required characteristics. In an arrangement which may be added or alternative to the above palladium over chromium layers forming parallel spaced-apart strips have on them or under them a further thin film or resistive layer having a higher resistivity than the strips. The sliding contact is of such a size that it is capable of bridging the gap between adjacent strips (Fig. 3, not shown). The layers may be covered with silicon oxide.
