Abstract

1,238,086. Catheter placement unit. SORENSON RESEARCH CORP. 26 June, 1969, No. 32417/69. Heading A5R. A catheter placement unit comprises a hollow needle 6 slidably received within a tube 10, initially disposed with its pointed end projecting from the tube, a catheter 15 extending within the needle and through the tube and initially terminating within the pointed end of the needle, a retracting member 8 on the other end of the needle, within the tube, having a part 9 projecting through the tube wall to retract the needle into the tube, and a passaged member 1 at the end of the tube to receive the pointed end of the needle when retracted. The needle may be retractable (see Fig. 6, not shown) by a lanyard attached to the needle hub and extending through the tube wall and held in its retracted position by a strip of adhesive tape 20. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the needle hub is guided in tracks defined by longitudinal slots in the tube and is held in a retracted position by detents formed in the tracks. The catheter is attached to an infusion system and the unit may be kept in a sterile wrapping.
