Abstract

1323024 Catheter ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970 (2)] 27248/71 Heading A5R A catheter 10 comprises at least two integral hollow tube sections of successively increasing diameter from front to rear which are eccentrically mounted relative to one another to form a substantially flush portion (40) Fig. 6 (not shown), and a pair of flexible, generally opposed, and laterally outwardly directed wing elements 36 and 38. The catheter comprises a front tube 26 which is flexible relative to a middle tube 26 and end tube 28. In use a needle 12 is mounted telescopically within catheter 10 so that the needle point 14 protrudes outside the catheter front end 30 which is tapered to allow easy insertion into a body member. After insertion, needle 12 is removed and wings 36 and 38 taped to the body member to prevent movement of the catheter 10. The rear hollow tube section 28 is shaped to take a frusto-conical fitting 16 of the needle or frusto-conical fitting 20 of a tube 18. The connection sections 32, 34 between the front and middle and middle and rear hollow tube sections respectively are also tapered, increasing in size from front to rear of the catheter 10. The catheter front end 30 may be formed as a needle point, thus making it unnecessary to use a needle for making a venipuncture.
