Abstract

1,243,211. Catheter placement assemblies. J. CARLE. 1 July, 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 31408/ 68. Heading A5R. A catheter placement unit comprises a hollow needle 10 slidable over a catheter 22 and having a cutting edge 12 at one end, an end portion of the catheter, which end portion has a length greater than that of the needle, being protected along its entire length from damage from said cutting edge when the needle is withdrawn over said end portion. The end portion of the catheter may have a thickened wall section (34), Fig. 4 (not shown); alternatively an extension 24 of an adaptor 26 for connection of the catheter, for example, to an infusion supply apparatus, may extend within the catheter along said end portion. The needle is curved, preferably so that the tangents to the ends of the needle curve subtend an angle of between 20‹ and 45‹ with one another, and has the end opposed to the cutting edge 12 formed with an adaptor 14 for connection of the needle to a syringe (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), to check correct insertion of the needle in the vein. Syringe (18) may have a locking device (20') for retaining the needle 10.
