Abstract
1,237,956. Road rollers. STOTHERT & PITT Ltd. 19 Feb., 1970 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 55063/68. Heading B7H. A self-propelled vibratory roller comprises a single roll made up of two sections 1, 2, a support structure 15 mounted for pivotal movement about the axis of the roll, an engine 23 for driving the roll, an engine 33 for applying vibratory motion to the roll, and torque reaction wheels 37 arranged on each side of the roll axis to limit angular movement of the support structure 15. Each torque reaction wheel 37 is connected to the support structure 15 so as to be vertically adjustable by means of an hydraulic ram 38 or a screw jack. The torque reaction wheels 37 can be turned into a position parallel to the roll axis so that the roller can be towed through hitching means at the other end of the support structure 15. The engine 23 drives a shaft 24 connected through independently operable clutches 24 and chain drives 20 to pinions (Fig. 2, not shown) meshing with gear rings attached to the roll sections 1, 2 by rubber mountings. Unbalanced vibrator shafts in the roll sections 1, 2 are coupled together and driven from the engine 33 through a belt drive 35.
