Abstract
1,237,921. Endless chain conveyers for glassware. J. M. EXTON. 1 July, 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 31322/68. Heading B8A. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for ornamenting glass articles by blasting includes an endless conveyer having holders with means to clamp the articles during passage through one or more blasting stations. Articles, e.g. glass tumblers 38, to be ornamented are carried through the blasting stations by a main conveyer consisting of two chains 22, 24. Article holders 36 are pivotally connected to the chains; each article is nested in a holder and pressed, by a clamp 40 connected to the holder, into engagement with a mask, at least during the actual blasting. Blasting station 10 includes a station conveyer consisting of two chains 42, 43 and blasting station 12 includes a station conveyer consisting of two chains 44, (45). All the chains travel at the same speed as the main conveyer chains. The station conveyers carry mask carriers 50. Each article holder 36 includes a bottom aperture adapted to receive the mask mounted on a carrier 50 prior to entry of one of the articles and its carrier into a blasting cabinet 14. As the articles emerge from the cabinet the masks are removed from the article holders. The masks mounted on the carriers at station 12 differ from the masks mounted on the carriers at station 10, so that the articles are further engraved or completed at station 12. The masks of station 12 preferably uncover the area uncovered by the masks of station 10 plus an additional area, thus creating a three-dimensional effect. The main conveyer chains 22, 24 comprise linked rollers 54 running within the cabinet 14 on angle irons 60, 62 secured to the inside of the cabinet 14. Each article holder 36 comprises a resilient member 70 replaceably retained in a holder having side walls 72, 74, front wall 76 and rear wall 78. Axles 77, 79 secured to the walls 72, 74 carry rollers 80, 82 and are secured to, or integral with, mounting plates 84, 86 secured to links 58 of the main conveyer chains. Elongated braces 140, 142 co-operating with the bearings 80, 82 are secured to mounting plates 144, 146 secured to the inside of the cabinet 14. Each clamp 40 is pinned at 152 between lugs 154 extending from the rear wall 78 of the holder and has legs 160, 162 provided with rubber pads 164, 166 to engage the article. An arm 168 carries rollers 170, 172 contacting a curved runway 176 mounted within the cabinet 14. The station conveyer chains 42, 43 comprise linked rollers 54 running within the cabinet 14 on plates 64, 66 secured to the inside of the cabinet 14. Each mask carrier 50 comprises L-shaped members 92, 94 to which is secured a base-plate 96. Axles 124, 126 secured to the members 92, 94 carry bearings 128, 130 and are secured to, or integral with, mounting plates 132, 134 secured to links 58 of the station conveyer chains. Elongated braces 148, 150 co-operating with the bearings 128, 130 are secured to the plates 64, 66. The members 92, 94 are slotted and their tops shaped at 145 to facilitate mating of the mask carrier 50 and the article holder 38 and to prevent relative horizontal movement by retention of axles 77, 79. The central portion of the base-plate 96 is stamped and bent to form curved slanting support walls 100, 102 suited to the shape of the article.
