Abstract

892,539. Endless conveyers. POSTMASTER GENERAL. March 9, 1960 [March 10, 1959], No. 8292/59. Class 78 (1). Article carriers, provided with horizontallyextending article-carrying forks and suspended from a chain or like flexible member supported by and guided along a fixed track, are provided with means for rotating the carriers about a vertical axis and through a predetermined angle of less than 360 degrees while travelling from a loading station to an unloading station. As shown, Fig. 1, an article carrier comprising L-shaped members 6 is secured to a sleeve 4 which is rotatably mounted on a rod 3 pivotally mounted on a bracket 2 secured to a guided chain 1. A toothed wheel 7 secured to the sleeve 4 is adapted to engage with a toothed rack 8 positioned adjacent the path of travel of the rod 3 intermediate a loading station and an unloading station, the wheel 7 having twice as many teeth as the rack 8 so that the article carrier is rotated through 180 degrees between the stations and so that the prongs of the carrier extend forwardly on approaching a loading station and extend rearwardly on approaching an unloading station. The sleeve 4 is biased into one of the two 180 degrees positions by means of arms 9, pivoted at 10 to the wheel 7 and urged by means of a spring 11 into engagement with a cam 13, secured to the rod 3 and provided with two parallel cam faces 17. To align the members 6 with corresponding slots provided in articlesupporting platforms at the stations, a member 14 is secured to the sleeve 4 and provided with parallel faces 15 which engage between fixed guides 16 positioned immediately before the stations. In a further embodiment (not shown), the article carriers may have additional sets of horizontally extending forks, in the same horizontal plane or in spaced horizontal planes, mounted in spaced angular relationship one with another, about the supporting member extending downwardly from the chain or similar flexible member. The carrier rotating means is then arranged so to rotate the carrier through an angle corresponding to the angular relationship of the several sets of forks about the vertical axis.
