A selective printer as described in the parent Specification 1,140,286 and including a rotary type basket 3 mounted fast on a shaft 11a and provided with an array of radial type bars 14 is modified in that the axis or rotation 10a of the type basket 3 is disposed behind the printing position 2 by a distance x which is determined primarily by the radial length of the type bars 14. In operation a type bar 14 is selected for impression at a selecting station 24 and raised upwardly by a cam 20, Fig. 2, integral with a guide ring 17, which maintains the type bars 14 in the radial plane of the type basket 3 by engaging the distal projections 14a on the type bars. Continued rotation of the type basket in the anti-clockwise direction forces the selected type bar against an advance cam 17a such that the type bar is impelled into contact with a printing cam 21a which in turn impells the type bar against the platen 1. Following impact the type bar rebounds from the platen whereupon the type bar is intercepted by a resetting cam 21b, which restores the type bar downwardly such that the type bar rides along a follow-up cam 17b and subsequently enters a cut-out 17d adjacent which is disposed a restoring flap 17c. Type-carriages.-The type basket 3 which is continuously rotated by a gear 8 mounted slidably on a shaft 7 and meshing with a gear 9 fast with the shaft 11a is provided with rollers 5 for movement on guide rails 6 which extend parallel to the platen 1.
