998,073. Selective printing. AUTOGRAPHIC BUSINESS FORMS Inc. Sept. 11, 1961 [July 3, 1961], No. 32581/61. Addition to 968,593. Heading B6F. Record-card controlled series printing.-The method of printing a series of bank cheques &c. in which a web 56 is pre-printed with common matter and then printed with unique matter at printing positions 52 and/or 53 as described in in the Parent Specification is improved in that after a predetermined number of cheques have been printed the feeding of the continuous web is stopped, the printers again set to the unique matter required for the next series or group of cheques, starting the feed again, and so on with further groups of unique matter. This matter, as described is derived from punched cards by a reader 50 and entered in a data storage 51. Special feed-roller rotation.-The position at which printing occurs is determined by the initial placing of the web on the pin wheel tractor 57 and a disc 69, which is geared to a shaft 67 driven from an electric motor 64. When the lobe 69 engages switch 70 the impression mechanism is operated. The distance apart of the two impressions from the printers 53, 52 may be varied under control of the data storage by arcuate movement of the switch 74 mounted on an arm 74a rotated by wormgearing and a motor 76. Line-spacing.-The distance between the printing by one line printed by printer 53 and that line printed by printer 52 may be varied by altering the speed by unit 63. Pin-tractor web feeds: cutting.-The web 56 is fed by two tractors 57, 58, a change-speed unit 63 and an electric motor 64. After the printing the perforations are longitudinally cut off and cheques cut transversely from the web. Web-tensioning arrangements.-To avoid slack in the web 56 the two tractors are coupled together by gearing 65. Counting.-The number of cheques &c. to be printed with one kind of unique matter is predetermined by the punched card and the data storage effects a drive to a motor 88 which, through a worm drive presets a contact arm 83 of a counter 78. There is a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism 81, 82, Fig. 2, coupling the arm 83 to the drive shaft 67 so that as each cheque is printed the arm restores one step. At the end of the required number of printing the arm 83 opens a switch 84 and the motor 64 is stopped.
