Abstract

1330367 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 21 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 34095/71 Heading B6F A carrier 16 for a print wheel is driven incrementally in letter-spacing direction by a reciprocable slidable rack 70 carried by a carrier support shaft 12. A latch (50, Figs. 3, 4) on the carrier 16 engages the rack 70, and a further latch (100) engages fixed teeth 66, 69 on the shaft 12 and defining a fixed rack in order to prevent reverse feed under bias of a spring 20 tensioned during letter spacing movement. The rack 70 is reciprocated by a solenoid 110. Carrier return is initiated by a solenoid 118 which acts on a lever 138 to lift a link 152 whereby the shaft 12 is rotated to disengage the latches from their respective racks. A spring-urged latch 32 holds the link in elevated position until a projection 28 on the carrier 16 strikes a projection 30 on the latch 32 to disengage same from link 152 and permit the shaft 12 to rotate into normal position. A dash-pot 22, 22a damps the motion of the carrier when returned.
