Abstract

1,237,595. Terminals. NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 13 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968], No. 7780/69. Heading H2E. A connector 10 comprises a pair of legs 12, 14 extending from an integral base section 16, the legs adjacent the base section being separated by a slot 22, and the legs adjacent the free end having edges 48, 50 which penetrate and slice the insulation of a conductor 42 inserted therebetween via an entry slot 24 and centering region 26. The width of the conductor-gripping portion 28 is less than the normal diameter of the conductive part of the insulated conductor, so as to achieve both good electrical and good mechanical connection. The legs 12, 14 are initially spread apart by a tapered punch or wedge (52, Fig. 2, not shown) in the slot 22, the elastic limit being exceeded by a predetermined amount .to produce a residuel deformation, which further ensures that the legs will tightly grip a conductor. For optimum cutting effect, the included angle-formed by the faces 34, 36 is between 90 and 120 degrees inclusive. The connector is made from a flat sheet of conductive material, e.g. steel, and may be one of several joined together at their base portions. To prevent wear and corrosion, a layer of, for example, tin on copper, may be applied. A connector having three legs, with two conductor receiving portions, is disclosed (Fig. 4 not shown) as is a slotted hand tool to facilitate insertion of the conductor (Fig. 3, not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,030,235.
