Abstract

1,235,989. Splitting concrete. GIKEN KOGYO K.K. 6 Aug., 1969 [26 Sept., 1968], No. 39437/69. Heading B5E. A method of demolishing a concrete construction comprises pouring a mixture of water and a material which expands upon hydration with water into a hollow within the concrete construction, and allowing the material to expand by hydration and thereby destroy the concrete construction. The hollow may be formed by drilling a hole in the construction. The material may be quicklime or calcined dolomite and is mixed with water and poured under pressure into the hole. A hydration reaction delaying agent, such as a substance containing one or more hydroxyl groups, e.g. glycerol, an alcohol, sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, gypsum or bentonite, may be added to the mixture, and the opening closed using a quick-hardening substance such as a mixture of sodium silicate and cement. Upon hydration, cracks are formed in the construction which may be a column, beam or wall.
