Abstract

Shrinkage is controlled in hardenable, esp. aq. cement mixtures, by introducing additives capable of performing an expansion without reacting with components of mixt. in sufficient quantity to suppress shrinkage through expansion during hardening of mixt. Pref. additive is water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol, which does not react with cement, and is pref. used in an amount of 0.5-5 wt.% and suppressed shrinkage is previous plastic shrinkage. Time for expansion of additive is controlled so that long-term shrinkage is suppressed. Uses include hydraulic cement, hydraulic lime, gypsum, and their mixtures, with aggregate, and water e.g. concrete, mortar, wall plaster.
