Abstract

A wall or ceiling plaster of high sound absorbing capacity consists of hydrated lime, fibrous asbestos and a foaming agent in the approximate weight proportion of 89 1/2 to 10 to 1/2 , the plaster containing numerous minute hollow cells giving it a density after drying of 18-23 lbs. per cubic foot, and the surface of the plaster has numerous spaced openings for admitting sound waves to the cells. The plaster is prepared by premixing finely ground hydrated lime preferably of dolomitic type with medium-length-fibre asbestos and a foaming agent such as a sodium salt of an alcohol sulphate, soap bark, sodium lauryl sulphate, an alkylated aryl-sulphate or the sodium salt of rosin and then adding water and mixing and aerating the mass for 2-15 minutes. The amount of water used is about 14 times the weight of the asbestos. The foamed mixture is then applied to a backing material which may be expanded metal, lath, concrete cinder block, painted plaster surfaces, gypsum lath, insulated board, clay or gypsum tile or to brick by trowelling (see Group XIII) and the spaced openings produced by stippling.
