Abstract
1,235,891. Burner controls; unit air heaters; air heaters; controlling air supply for combustion. WILKINS & MITCHELL Ltd. 30 June, 1969 [30 March, 1968; 17 Oct., 1968], Nos. 15447/68 and 49355/68. Headings F4S, F4T, F4V and F4W. A heater comprises a gas burner 15, a fan 21 to pump combustion air to the burner 15 through a duct 18 and means sensitive to the pressure of gas in a gas supply pipe 32 upstream of the burner 15 to control the fan 21 and/or the cross-sectional area of the duct 18 to vary the supply of combustion air delivered to the burner 15 along the duct 18 in dependence upon the pressure of gas so as substantially to match in use the quantity of air delivered to the requirements of the quantity of gas being burnt. As shown in Fig. 1, the pressure sensitive control means includes a diaphragm unit 26 which comprises a diaphragm 28 acted upon on one side by an adjustable spring 29 in a housing 27 and on the other side by the pressure of gas in the supply pipe 32 to which the housing 27 is connected by a pipe 31; as the pressure changes the diaphragm 28 moves thereby moving a rod 24 which abuts a pivotally mounted flap 23 in the duct 18 to thereby charge the cross-sectional area thereof. The burner 15 is contained in a heat exchanger 14 and air passes through the heat exchanger 14 via a passage 11, containing a fan 16 and having an inlet 12 and an outlet 13. Adjacent the inlet 12 is situated a temperature sensing element 34 which senses the temperature of the incoming air and in respect thereof alters the setting of temperature-sensitive control valve 33 in the gas pipe 32 upstream of the pressure-sensitive control means to reduce the gas supply as the temperature of the incoming air rises. The fans 16 and 21 are driven by an electric motor 17 and a further control valve 35 is provided in the gas supply pipe 32 to coarsely adjust the gas flow in respect of the speed of the motor 17 using one of two alternative positions. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) a fan (38) supplying combustion air is driven by an electric motor (39) whose speed is varied by means of an eddy current brake (41): a magnet (42) of the brake (41) is pivotally mounted and is operated by a rod (43) of a diaphragm unit (44). In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) a first diaphragm unit (57) senses the gas pressure in a gas supply pipe (48) immediately upstream of a burner (46) and a second diaphragm unit (59) senses the pressure of the combustion air in a duct (47) downstream of a movable flap (51) in the duct (47) which flap is movable by a rod (53) connected to a pivoted beam (55) connected to the diaphragm units (57, 59).
