A silica pigment is prepared from wet silica which has been produced from an aqueous silicate solution by precipitation, the silica having a free water content of from 1 to 10 parts of occluded water per part of silica, by a process comprising freezing and thawing the wet silica. The wet silica may be alkaline, acidic, metalsalt-treated or a metal-salt-treated acidic pigment, and may be frozen as a fluid slurry, as a wet filter cake, or as a wet pressed cake. The wet silica may also be subjected to mechanical working prior to freezing.
