Abstract
1,235,506. I. C. engine combustion chambers. A.G. BODINE. Sept. 5, 1968 [Jan. 16, 1968], No.42244/68. Heading F1B. A sound attenuator in the combustion chamber comprises an apertured barrier 17 between the central portion of the chamber and a space 18 concentrically surrounding the barrier between the barrier and the chamber wall. The apertures 21 and the space 18 are dimensioned to dissipate sonic energy at the frequencies of the detonation vibrationsproducedin the chamber. The barrier 17 may be formed on the piston 12 by machining or welded thereto. The barrier may comprise slotted members (17a, 17b), Fig.4 (not shown), on the piston and cylinder head, the space (18) surrounding the barrier being formed by a recess in the cylinder wall. Circular holes (21), Fig.6 (not shown), may form the barrier apertures. The barrier 17 and the space 18 may be formed in the piston 12, Fig. 10 (not shown). The spark plug 14 may be replaced by a fuel injector.
