Abstract

1,235,353. Mining installations. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 14 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 3033/68. Heading E1F. A longwall mineral mining installation includes a mining machine mounted for reciprocal movement along a mineral face, and a buffer assembly having a first part attached to an abutment of the installation and a second part adapted to be contacted by the machine, when the latter is moving, to decelerate it at a predetermined rate. The machine is formed by a plough 2 loading a conveyor 3 driven by a motor 6, the plough being driven by motor 7 through an endless chain 8. The motors 6 and 7 may be duplicated at the other end of the conveyor 3. Self-advancing roof supports 10 and conveyor-advancing rams 11 are provided. The buffer assembly 13 is formed by a piston 14 and a cylinder 15 and a similar assembly may be disposed at the other end of the conveyor 3. The fluid from each cylinder 15 passes through a hydraulic yield valve or a variable orifice to a hydraulic accumulator 16, and a pressure responsive switch provided in the circuit is operable upon a predetermined pressure being reached to cause the plough motor 7 to be stopped. The switch may also cause sequence valves to operate the conveyor advancing rams 11, and cause the motor 7 to be reversed for return movement of the plough. The pressure responsive switch may be replaced by a switch actuated by movement of the piston 14.
