Abstract

1,010,872. Advancing mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1962], No. 38394/62. Heading F1P. A warning bell 38, Fig. 3, is located near each group of a series of groups of sequentially advanced hydraulic mine roof support units 4 and rings prior to or during advance of an associated support unit and is operated by a change in length of a double-acting hydraulic jack 9 which normally urges the conveyer 1, Fig. 1, towards the coal face 2 and which is released immediately prior to and during advance of the roof support unit 4 towards the conveyer. As shown the roof supports 4 are arranged in groups of three, one unit of each group having a jack 9 hinged at 11 thereto at the end 28 remote from the rod 13 which is loosely surrounded by a sleeve 12 secured to the conveyer and on which the bell 38 is mounted and against the end 36 of which sleeve 12 the rod 13 pushes in normal working using the fixed roof support as anchorage. The bell striker 43-45 is secured to a pivot pin 39 tensioned by oppositely acting springs 46, 47 and has a lug 42 which when displaced by axially spaced projections 52 on the rod 13 causes the bell to ring. This occurs during retraction of the rod 13 effected by hydraulic fluid admitted through a port 34 leading to the space between double walls 26, 27 of the jack cylinder and thence through an aperture 35. On operating the roof support advancing jack 7 the cylinder and piston of jack 9 is also carried forward resulting in ringing of bell 38. The hydraulic system for effecting sequential advance of each group of roof supports is as described in Specifications 991,008 and 983,268.
