A ring spinning or winding machine or draw-twisting frame comprises an hydraulically driven traversing means 1 carrying a switching finger 8, at least one electrical limit switch at one end of the stroke of the traversing means and a plurality of electrical limit switches at the other end of the stroke, the switches being actuable by the switching finger and displaceable by adjusting means 9, 10. As shown, limit switches 11, 12 are provided for reversing the traverse and are associated with control switches 13, 14 to accelerate the traverse means near the ends of its stroke so as to produce a tapered-end package. The switches control the direction and rate of hydraulic flow in the cylinder 6. The switches are mounted on threaded rods 9, 10 which are reversibly driven by motor 15 via a clutch in gear box 16. The rotation of the threaded rods 9, 10 is controlled by a switch gear 17. The switch gear 17 comprises a switching disc 18 which is driven by motor 15 and which carries switch actuating elements 21, 22 for switchways 19, 20. Each of these switchways can control the duration of the rotations of the rods 9, 10. By selectively actuating one of the switchways a further limit switch 23 and control switch 24 can be brought into operation instead of switches 12, 14 so as to wind longer packages. Alternatively, the switches 23, 24 can be brought into operation either by displacing the switchway carrier 25 so that the switch actuating elements 21 or 22 can act on a different switchway, or by replacement of the disc 18, or by replacement of the switch actuating elements alone.
