Abstract
A hydraulic piston 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) attached by its rod 1 and a belt 4 to a traversing member, e.g. a ring or spindle rail, has its direction of movement controlled by a control piston 34 which in turn is controlled by solenoids 35, 36 connected to limit switches 7, 8. The limit switches are operated alternately by a member 6 on the piston rod 1 and are moved during the build to produce a shaped package. The switches may be moved by chains, pinion racks or control plates or, by threaded spindles 11, 12. In their movement, switches 7, 8 actuate further switches 17, 18, 19, 20 which determine the initial and final positions and at the end of a build cause the switches 7, 8 to be wound back to their starting positions. Each spindle 11, 12 is driven by one of two D.C. motors 22, 23 and 24, 25, the motors being operated in accordance with a preset programme to produce a desired build. The programme is determined by an impulse generator 49 or 50 (Fig. 2, not shown) which may be operated magnetically, photo-electrically or mechanically to supply impulses proportional to thread delivery speed. Alternatively the generator may be in the form of a magnetic tape or a perforated card.
