Abstract
1,234,181. Coating. ASSOCIATED CHEMICAL COMPANIES Ltd. 7 June, 1968 [14 June, 1967; 27 Nov., 1967], Nos. 27489/67 and 53816/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C7] An electrical apparatus comprises a laminated component consisting of a stack or coil of metal coated with a chromate-type coating. The metal is preferably silicon steel but may be Fe, Al, Mg, Zn, or alloys thereof, and the coating is applied by brushing, dipping or spraying on the metal an aqueous composition comprising (a) a hexavalent chromium compound (b) a trivalent chromium compound (c) silica and/or a silicate in a total amount of at least 0.5 gms. per 100 ml., and (d) an alkali-metal cation, the weight ratio of hexavalent chromium to total chromium being between 0.5:1 and 0.75:1, the total Cr content being 0.5 g/100 ml. (calculated as CrO 3 ) and the weight ratio of Cr<SP>VI</SP> (as CrO 3 ), to alkali metal (calculated as the hydroxide) being between 5:1 and 100:1. The coating is preferably cured at 150-500‹C., and may be annealed at above 500‹C. A metal coated with a chromate layer and then with plastic is also described.
