Abstract
1,233,675. Roadway de-icing. B. F. HINRICHS. 25 July, 1969 [7 Aug., 1968], No. 37451/69. Heading E1G. Ice is prevented from forming on a roadway 10 by means of apparatus which automatically sprays liquid or granular de-icing material (e.g. salt) on the roadway when actuated by a control circuit which includes a thermostat and optional humidistat. As shown, roadside salt hoppers 14 each have a discharge opening 26 and a spraying motor 18; alternatively the de-icing material may be a liquid stored in a tank and supplied by gravity via a solenoidcontrolled valve or by a pump to a perforated conduit lying alongside the roadway. The control circuit includes a timer 30, a thermostat 38 and humidistat 40. The timer 30, which includes a motor 32 whose shaft drives, switchactuating cams 46 and 52, controls the time periods of spreading; cam 46 closes switch 42 in the motor circuit to ensure rotation of the motor 32 through a complete cycle, and the spaced lobes on cam 52 close switch 28 periodically to energize the spreading motor 18. The thermostat 38 is preferably buried just below the surface of the roadway, with an additional thermostat or a humidistat 40 just above the surface.
