Abstract

1,233,468. Partial esters of alternate copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Nov., 1969 [19 Nov., 1968], No. 54799/68. Heading C3P. A solid particulate partial ester of an alternating copolymer of an alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a vinyl monomer containing not more than 3 carbon atoms is prepared by reacting the finely divided copolymer with a C 1-8 alcohol, with or without the addition of water, in a reaction medium which does not dissolve, or react with, the original copolymer or the partial ester product, the anhydride copolymer and the alcohol being present in such an amount that the ratio of hydroxy groups to anhydride groups is not greater than 16:10 when the alcohol has 1 or 2 carbon atoms and not greater than 9:10 when the alcohol has 3 to 8 carbon atoms, and thereafter drying the reaction product. In the examples (1) methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride alternating copolymers are reacted with methanol in toluene, propanol and water in toluene, propanol in ethylene dichloride, propanol in white spirit, isooctanol in toluene, optionally in the presence of pyridine as an esterification catalyst; nbutanol in toluene and a butanol/ethanol mixture in toluene; (2) a propylene/maleic anhydride copolymer is reacted with ethanol in toluene; and (3) an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer is reacted with ethanol in toluene. The products may be dissolved in acetone or industrial methylated spirits and used to coat tablets and as a base resin for hair lacquers respectively.
