Abstract

1,145,961. Esterifying molten resins; foamed esterified resins. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 5 Dec., 1967 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1860/67. Addition to 1,106,489. Headings C3C and C3P. A thermoplastic resin containing alcoholic groups is subjected whilst in the molten state to the action of an esterifying agent whereby alcoholic groups of the resin are esterified. Suitable resins are polymers of unsaturated alcohols, particularly vinyl alcohol. Suitable esterifying agents are acid anhydrides particularly those of acids containing two carboxyl groups e.g. succinic, maleic and phthalic anhydrides. These result in polymers containing acid groups which may be reacted with base either during or after esterification to produce salts. The reaction may be carried out in a continuous mixing machine, a screw extruder or on mills-rolls. A blowing agent e.g. a volatile hydrocarbon may be included in the extruder so that a foamed product is obtained. An acid - group - containing resin may be cross-linked e.g. by reaction with a resin containing alcohol groups. A catalyst may be used for the esterification e.g. sodium acetate. In the examples a copolymer of ethylene, vinyl alcohol, vinyl acetate and monovinyl phthalate, is prepared by esterifying a copolymer of ethylene, vinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate with phthalic anhydride and its sodium salt prepared by treating with sodium hydroxide in methyl alcohol. In Example 2 sodium acetate and sodium methoxide are used as catalysts. In Example 3 maleic acid is used in place of phthalic anhydride. In Example 4 succinic anhydride is also used. In Example 5 a foamed resin is prepared using butane as blowing agent and silica as nucleating agent.
