Abstract
1,232,977. Lamps. S. BALFOUR-LYNN. 8 Aug., 1968 [11 Aug., 1967; 13 May, 1968], No. 37077/67. Heading F4R. [Also in Division A4] A lamp for illuminating a page of a book comprises a rectangular sheet 1 of transparent material tapering in thickness from one edge to the opposite edge and a lamp housing 2 disposed along the thicker edge and arranged to project light into the sheet, the light being reflected from one surface of the sheet so as to pass out through the other surface and illuminate a page placed flat against the other surface. The page is read by viewing it through the sheet. A spring- loaded backing plate 14, which may be made of polished or plated metal to serve as a mirror, is pivoted to the housing to hold the page in place. The lamps 9, which are low-voltage lowintensity lamps such as torch bulbs, may be powered by a rechargeable battery in the housing or by a step-down transformer connected to the housing by a flexible lead. The primary winding of the transformer may be controlled by a switch operated by a relay which is itself powered by the battery and controlled by a switch mounted on the housing. Ventilating apertures 8 are formed in the housing and are shielded from the lamps by reflectors 13. The free edges of the sheet are rendered opaque, e.g. by painting, and the top surface of the sheet may be half-silvered to form a semi-transparent coating for use as a mirror. In a modification the sheet forms the front glass of a picture frame.
