Abstract

1,091,516. Edge illuminated signs. PETERLITE PRODUCTS Ltd., M. ROSS and L. J. SAXTY. Feb. 23, 1966 [July 14, 1965], No. 29803/65. Heading G5C An edge illuminated sign comprises a transparent plate 20 with markings engraved on one surface 21 and a light reflective backing 26 contiguous with the opposite surface 22 and extending over the whole surface. The reflecting backing may be a reflective coating deposited on the surface 26 by silvering or aluminizing, or a separate reflector may be provided and fixed to the plate 20, e.g. a polished sheet of metal. Such a separate reflector may be positioned between two transparent plates engraved on their surfaces not in contact with the reflector. The surface bearing the engraving may also have a light reflecting backing with the markings cut through it. The edges of the glass or rigid plastics plate 20 are plain polished or bevel ground. Illumination is through one or more edges.
