Abstract

1,232,555. Vacuum sheet forming. O. HOFLIGER, and R. KARG [trading as HOFLIGER & KARG]. 3 Feb., 1970 [8 Feb., 1969], No. 5075/70. Heading B5A. In a machine of the type in which sheet material 12 is passed under a heater 13 and vacuum formed into the recesses 1 in the surface of a revolving drum 2, the recesses being connected to the vacuum slot 4 of a vacuum control ring 3 after passage under the heater, a second vacuum slot 5 located under the heater, is provided in the ring. The slot 4 is permanently connected, during operation of the drum, to a suction device whereas slot 5 is connected to the suction device via a solenoid valve 10 which is opened to render the slot operative only after shut-down of the machine. In this way, the heated portion of material located under the heater during the shut-down, which portion would otherwise be too cold after restarting the machine to be satisfactorily formed by slot 4, is formed whilst still sufficiently hot by the vacuum applied through slot 5 and wastage is avoided. The heater is pivoted at 14 and the operation of the valve may be synchronized with the outward pivotal movement of the heater upon shut-down.
