Abstract

1,232,186. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m.b.H. 19 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 62117/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] The suitability of polymeric synthetic filaments of non-cellulosic origin which are capable of undergoing cross-linking when heating in the presence of a dehydrogenating agent, for carbonization is improved by thus heating the filaments within a temperature range of 175- 300‹ C., while tensioning the filaments; the temperature of the filaments being increased within the said range at a rate of 3-35‹ C. per hour. The filaments may be heated in a stream of air, or of modified air, which contains either up to 40% or up to 10% of oxygen by volume; chlorine or liquid sulphur may also be used as dehydrogenating agents. The dehydrogenating agent used may be supplemented with other dehydrogenating agents, for example boric acid, ammonium sulphate, and ammonium phosphate; and a radical producer for example α- nitrophenol or parathiocresol or a radical attracter e.g. hydroxylamine or urea. In a preferred embodiment, polyacrylonitrile filaments were pulled through a furnace with a temperature profile such that a rate of increase of 35‹ C. per hour was obtained within the range 175-300‹ C. The filament obtained was black and flexible, having an elasticity modulus of 7À9 x 10<SP>4</SP> Kp/cm.<SP>2</SP> and a tear resistance of 0À9 x 10<SP>3</SP> Kp/cm.<SP>2</SP>. The treated fibres are then carbonized; for details see Divison C1.
