Abstract

1284415 Carbonizing cellulose fibres NITTO BOSEKI CO Ltd 9 Oct 1969 [12 Oct 1968 5 Sept 1969 (3)] 49630/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division D1] Cellulose fibre material, i.e. cellulose fibres, or a woven or non-woven fabrics made wholly or partially from cellulose fibres, are treated with a strength increasing agent which consists ofor includes at least one non-metallic compound formed of an oxy acid of sulphur and a nitrogencontaining base, and the treated material carbonized by heating at a temp. in the range 180‹ to 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. If desired this product may be further heat treated in an inert atmosphere at a temperature above 1000‹ C. The oxy-acid of sulphur may be sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid, thiosulphuric acid, sulphamic acid, and imido-sulphonic acid, and the nitrogen containing base may be selected from urea, thiourea, amines ammonia, guanidine, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine, triethylamine, triethanolamine, pyridine and aniline. The strength increasing agent may be ammonium sulphate, ammonium bisulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium bisulphite, ammoniumthiosulphate, ammonium sulphamate, ammonium imidosulphonate or a mixture of any two or more of these. If desired, at least one of these ammonium salts may be mixed with at least one of urea, thiourea and amines. The strength increasing agent may be used as an aqueous solution. The carbonizing step may be carried out at a heating rate of 1‹ to 5‹ C./min. The treating agent may contain in addition a flame resistance improving agent which comprises at least one of ammonium phosphate, guanidine phosphate, aluminium ammonium sulphate and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride.
