Abstract
1391501 Poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) fibres E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 27 April 1972 [28 April 1971 17 Aug 1971] 19575/72 Heading B5B A poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) fibre is disclosed, having a density of no less than 1À40 g./cm.<SP>3</SP>, a lateral birefringence (as herein defined) of from 0À022 to 0À065, crystalline regions with an apparent crystallite size of 58 to 125 and an orientation angle of 6 to 13; the ratio of the apparent crystallite size to the orientation angle is at least 6/degree. The polymer of the fibre must have an inherent viscosity of at least 4À0; fibres may be produced from this by spinning solutions of it in sulphuric acid (at least 98% H 2 SO 4 ), chlorosulphuric acid or fluorosulphuric acid, into a coagulant such as water. The fibres of the invention are prepared from such of these fibres as have a density of no less than 1À40 g./cm.<SP>3</SP>, or orientation angle of less than 22 C. a lateral birefringence of at least 0À02, and an apparent crystallite size of less than 52. These fibres are maintained under tension in a zone of a temperature of at least 150 C. for a length of time sufficient to give the necessary values of the apparent crystallite size and the orientation angle. The tension is at least 0À5 g./denier feet less than the tension required to draw the fibre 1À03 times its original length at the temperature used. The time of heating is such that neither the original tensile strength, nor the inherent viscosity clearance decrease by more than 30%.
