Textile slivers of different types, e.g. synthetic or natural fibres of different staple length, are blended by passing different slivers through different ones of a plurality of individual drafting units I-IV, superimposing drafted slivers of each type onto a common conveyor 12 and then passing the combined sliver through a secondary drafting unit V. The units are all driven by a common prime mover and transmission means interposed between the prime mover and each unit controls the speed of rotation of the front drafting rollers of the drafting units independantly of each other.
