A method of making a package, e.g. for liquid-containing glass carboys 12, comprises locating a wrapping 10 of plastics, e.g. polyethylene, inside an open framework 11 and around and spaced from the carboy 12 and introducing within the wrapping 10 mixed liquids of a plastics foam system to form, around the carboy, a foamed plastics coating 21, e.g. of polyurethane, so that during foaming the wrapping 10 is expanded to fill the open framework 11, such expansion being limited by an outer casing (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), e.g. of aluminium sheet which is removed later. A conical plate (17) is fitted around the carboy's neck to restrain upward expansion of the coating 21 during foaming and then removed. The ends of the wrapping 10 are fastened around the carboy's neck by an elastic band 18 and held by a heavy polyethylene collar 9. Final closure is effected by a top 20 of the open framework 11. The carboy may be supported within the wrapping before foaming by either a bottom support of a piece of prefoamed plastics (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), or a neck clamp (13). In a modification, Fig. 4, foaming is performed, without the open framework 11, whilst inverted in a metal jig 23 so that the carboy's neck is also surrounded by the foamed plastics. A lid 25 is positioned before the final shot of the foam liquid system after which the jig's hinge lid 28 is closed. After foaming the jig is removed and the package placed in the open framework. The open framework may replace the metal jig in the modified method.
