A cheese is made in the form of a block having flat sides at least one side of which is provided with a plastic coating comprising a colouring agent. Suitable cheeses are of the Edam and Gouda variety. The coating, which may be applied as an emulsion, may comprise a copolymer of debutyl maleate and vinyl acetate plus a watersoluble dye, for example cochineal. Alternatively the coating may be in the form of either a coloured plastics sheet, or two clear plastic sheets having sandwiched therebetween coloured rice paper.
