Abstract

1,229,338. Vehicle ventilators. T. SHINYA. 11 April, 1969, No. 18647/69. Heading F4V. A ventilator for the roof of a railway vehicle has a plurality of baffle plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> made of a plastic and having an arcuate, vertical corrugated surface 6 and stepped horizontal flanges 7, 8 at top and bottom. The ventilator has inlets 5, 5<SP>1</SP> one of which faces into the airstream depending upon whether the vehicle is moving forwardly or backwardly and an inlet 10 to the carriage. If the ventilator is used to supply fresh air, an opening 20 is closed by coverplates 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and plates 25, 251 are swung to the position shown in chain dot whereby air entering through inlet 5 (or 5<SP>1</SP>) passes via openings 26, 26<SP>1</SP> and a deflector plate 23 to the inlet 10 of the carriage. If stale air is to be extracted from the carriage, the opening 20 is uncovered and the plates 25, 25<SP>1</SP> are swung to the position shown in full line when the air entering at 5 (or 5<SP>1</SP>) passes out through the opening 20 causing a partial vacuum and drawing air out of the carriage via opening 10. The ventilator can be opened or closed by a spring-loaded lever operating a cover-plate for the opening 10 to the carriage (Fig. 5).
