The liquid content of a filter cake is decreased by providing the filter chamber with a pressure member such as an elastic pipe arranged spirally or in zig-zag fashion, or a pair of justaposed elastic diaphragms which are sealed together in places to form cells, the pressure member being expanded by a pressure fluid, such as compressed air, whereby mutual displacement of the particles of the filter cake takes place Figs. 2 and 3 show one filter chamber 4 of a filter press comprising filter cloths 5, frames 1 and plates 2 movably arranged on a supporting structure (not shown). A spirally-arranged rubber pipe 3 is disposed in chamber 4 between struts 6. The inner end of pipe 13 is hermetically closed by plug 14. The inoperative position of the press is represented by A in Fig. 2. When a suspension of solid particles in liquid is pumped in through channels 7 and 8, the liquid penetrates cloths 5 and filtrate leaves through channels 11 while wet cake 12 builds up in chamber 4 whereby pipe 13 is compressed (position B). When chamber 4 is full of cake, the supply of suspension is discontinued, compressed air is introduced through pipe 13 into pipe 3 which expands and compresses the cake 12 in various directions, thereby forcing out liquid therefrom (position C). The pressure in pipe 3 is then released, the frames and plates are spaced apart, and the cake is thrown out by again introducing compressed air into pipe 3 (position D). The outer wall of pipe 3 may be ribbed or knurled, and may be sheathed in filter cloth.
