Abstract

A method of building a brick wall comprises laying a layer of mortar on the foundation (or a lower course of bricks), pressing a series of spacers into the mortar until their lower faces abut the foundation (or lower course), and then pressing the next course of bricks down until their lower faces abut the upper faces of the spacers. The spacers are resilient so that they can be slightly compressed as the mortar shrinks. Each brick is normally supported by four spacers and spacers are also placed between adjacent bricks in a course. An inverted T-shaped spacer combines the functions of spacing adjacent courses and adjacent bricks in a course. Other shapes of spacer are described and shown.
