[Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of the formulae wherein Y is a C 2-6 alkylene group having 2 or 3 C atoms separating the CO groups, vinylene, or a C 2-4 1,3-propylene group in which the 2-C atom is replaced by O, S, SO or SO,; Y<SP>1</SP> is a single bond or a C 1-8 alkylene group, optionally interrupted by 1 to 3 groups selected from O, S, SO and S0 2 (these groups, when more than one is present, being separated by at least 2 C atoms; R is (C 1-6 alkanoyl-)NH, (C 1-6 alkanoyl-) NHCH 2 , (C 1-6 alkanoyl-)N-(C 1-4 alkyl), (C 1-4 alkoxy - C 1-6 alkanoyl)NH, (C 1-4 alkoxy - C 1-6 alkanoyl)N(C 1-4 alkyl), (C 1-4 alkyl)NHCO, (C 1-4 alkyl) 2 NCO, HOOC-Y<SP>1</SP>-CONH, HOOC-Y<SP>1</SP>-CON(C 1-4 alkyl) ; R<SP>1</SP> is H, C 1-4 alkyl, hydroxy-C 1-4 alkyl ; and R<SP>11</SP> is H or C 1-4 alkyl, are obtained (1) by decarboxylation of compounds of formulae or a salt thereof, by heating in an organic solvent; or (2) by formation of cyclic imides and anilic acids from compounds of the formula wherein R‹ is H 2 N, (C 1-6 alkanoyl)NH, (C 1-6 alkanoyl) - NHCH 2 , (C 1-6 alkanoyl)N(C 1-4 alkyl), (C 1-4 alkyl)NHCO, (C 1-4 alkyl) 2 NCO, or or HOOC-Y-CO-N(C 1-4 alkyl), and Q is H or C 1-6 alkanoyl, by reaction with a compound of formula Preparation of intermediates is described as follows: 3-Amino-5-nitrobenzoic acid is heated with succinic anhydride in the presence of H 2 SO 4 to yield 3-succinimido-5-nitrobenzoic acid which is treated with warm dilute aqueous NaOH to form 3<SP>1</SP>-carboxy-5<SP>1</SP>-nitro-succinanilic acid. The latter is reduced with aqs. FeSO 4 and NH 4 OH to yield 3<SP>1</SP>-carboxy-5<SP>1</SP>-aminosuccinanilic acid. 3-Glutarimido-5-nitrobenzoic acid is similarly obtained and may be catalytically reduced to 3-glutarimido-5-aminobenzoic acid.
