An electrophotographic element includes a polymeric substance comprising recurring groups of formula wherein R is H, an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group and Z represents the atoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic nucleus. Specifically exemplified are poly - 1,2 - dihydro - 2,2,4 - trimethyl quinoline and its nitrated derivative and a poly quinoline derivative also polymerized through an N- carboxy vinyl group. Either homopolymers or copolymers may be used and may be mixed with another polymer, e.g. copoly vinyl chlorideacetate-alcohol, poly vinyl n-butyral, copoly butadiene-styrene, a silicone resin, an epoxy resin, or copoly vinyl chloride-acetate-maleic anhydride. A pigment or another photoconductor such as a starch composition, a mixture of Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , CaCO 3 and MgCO 3 or ZnO may be added to the photoconductive layer. Sensitizing dyestuffs may be added. The photoconductive layer may be formed on a support of glassine paper or polyethylene terephthalate coated with gelatin and a polyionic conductive polymer, many other conductive supports being listed. Electrophotographic plates sensitive to γ or X-rays or developable by thermoplastic deformation may be made. Monomeric compounds or blends with wholly or partly polymerized substances may be coated on to a support and polymerized in situ.
