A machine for producing rectangular portions of veneer, for the production of matches or small wooden boxes, from a veneer sheet 2 comprises an inlet conveyer 1, two traction rollers 3, 4 having blades for cutting the sheet into strips, a guillotine shearing device 6, 7 for cutting the veneer into lengths, and a series of star wheels 18 having spring means 19, 20 in the gap between each pair of teeth for engaging a cut portion of the veneer. The veneer is fed with its grain transverse to the direction of feed by the conveyer 2 to the nip between the rollers 3, 4 which have circular blades for cutting the veneer into strips, the cuts being perpendicular to the grain. The shearing device effects cuts parallel to the grain and has a blade 6 which coacts with a blade 7. The blades are mounted on a frame 8 which'is reciprocated in a horizontal direction parallel to the direction of feed of the veneer on a slide 9 by a rocking lever 10 and link 11 from a shaft 12 which, through a rod 14 and link 15, also effects vertical movement of the blade 6 to effect the cutting operation. The portions of veneer, before cutting, are gripped by springs 19, 20 between the teeth 17 of star wheels 18 rotated in synchronism with the feed of the veneer, the cut portions being ejected from the wheels by vertical movement of an ejector 22 carried by frame 8 and dropping on to a discharge conveyer 23. A thrust element 24 horizontally reciprocated by a lever 26 rocked by a linkage 27 presses the cut portions together on the conveyer. A blower and scraper 30 cleans the veneer before it is fed to the rollers 3, 4.
