Abstract

1,228,179. Moulds. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. 1 Aug., 1968 [8 Aug., 1967], No. 36719/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A mould for casting liquid metal is made from a steel comprising the balance being Fe and has, throughout the thickness thereof, a uniform structure with 60-90% of the carbon being fixed in the form of carbides, the rest being combined in the form of Cr and Mn saturated cementite. The mould is preferably formed by centrifugal casting, followed by air hardening at 900-950‹ C. and tempering at around 640‹ C. An alternative heat treatment comprises water or oil quenching and then tempering at 660-680‹ C. The moulds are suitable for casting melts of Fe, Al, Cu or Cu alloys melting below 1300‹ C. and are cooled by water-spraying.
