Abstract

1,227,544. Making shadow masks. BUCKBEE-MEARS CO. 26 Aug., 1968 [11 June, 1968], No. 40658/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H1] A self-supporting shadow mask for a colour television tube comprises a thin metallic sheet, e.g. of stainless steel, having a concave apertured portion 10 surrounded by an imperforate rim 11 which extends rearwardly at 12 and which is provided with a continuous strengthening rib 13, the portion 12 merging into a flange portion 14 extending inwardly. The flange portion 14 acts as a haze shield and may end in a lip 15, as shown, or may be flared outwardly to the envelope to form a beam shield portion. Three mounting members may be welded to the rim 12, each mounting member comprising a stainless steel strip from which a tongue is punched out, the end of the tongue being provided with a hole for engaging a mounting pin or stud projecting inwardly from the tube envelope. In manufacture, the area 10 is formed in the centre of a metal sheet by a photo-resist method and the metal sheet is annealed and rolled before insertion into a die block. If the mask is rectangular, as shown, notches are cut in the four corner areas, and the rim is drawn down preferably in a step-by-step manner. After the rim 12 has been formed, the flange 14 is formed by flaring the remainder of the sheet, preferably the long sides first then the short sides and finally pressing the corner areas inwards. The mask is clamped whilst the corners and gussets are spotwelded, and the mounting means are welded to the outside of the rim 12. Finally the strengthening rib 13 is formed in the rim 12 whilst the mask is held securely in a fixture.
