Abstract

1,214,425. Colour television tubes. BUCKBEE-MEARS CO. 10 April, 1969 [6 Jan., 1969], No. 18430/69. Heading H1D. In making a colour television tube of the shadow mask type wherein the mask is used as a stencil when forming the fluorescent screen, the mask is provided with smaller apertures during these processes than when it is subsequently incorporated in the tube. The base mask 12 shown in Fig. 2 is made by a photographic method and is exposed on one side through a positive plate and on the other side through a negative plate, the latter process leaving a pattern of enamel dots on one side of the mask. This side is plated with a zinc layer 12a after which the mask is etched to form the apertures 13 and to remove the support for the enamel dots thereby forming the smaller apertures 14. After the formation of the fluorescent screen through the small apertures 14 the layer 12a is etched away leaving the large apertures 13 in the final shadow mask. In another method of manufacture, both sides of a metal sheet are photo-printed and the apertures 13 are etched out. Both sides are then plated to partially close the apertures 13, and after the screen processing the outer layers are removed by etching. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), two independent shadow masks with identical dot patterns but different-sized apertures are joined together during the screen processing, and the mask with the smaller apertures is removed before final assembly. The two masks may be made by a photographic process using the same master plate but different etching times. Alternatively the masks may be made by electroplating on a carrier member, the second mask being plated for a longer period so that the openings in it are smaller. The two masks must be domed or formed in the same die under identical conditions, and the mask with the smaller apertures may be used over and over again with a number of separate larger-aperture masks.
