Abstract

1,224,850. Making screens. ZENITH RADIO CORP. 26 Nov., 1969 [28 March, 1969], No. 57895/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H1] A shadow mask for a colour television tube comprises a metal plate 10, Fig. 3, containing an array of apertures 11 opposite each of which is provided a recess 11a of similar shape. The shadow mask is used to produce a fluorescent screen by a photo-resist process, and after processing the screen the mask is etched to enlarge the apertures 11. In one example a sheet of cold rolled steel is coated on each side with a photo-resist and illuminated through a mask to provide a dot pattern on each side, and after etching in ferric chloride apertures are formed as shown in Fig. 3. The mask is used in photoresist processes to form on the screen firstly a dark area between phosphor dot areas, and then the three sets of phosphor dots, after which the screen is aluminized. The mask is then subjected to a second etch which enlarges the apertures and reduces the thickness of the mask. The initial thicknesses E1 and E2 may be 7 mils and 2¢ mils, the diameters D1 and D2 9 mils and 22 mils, the final thicknesses 5 mils and 1¢ mils, and the final aperture diameter 16 mils. The apertures need not be of uniform size, but may increase in diameter with radial distance from the centre; they may also be of elongate form (Fig. 5, not shown) so that the mask becomes a grid and the screen is of the multi-line type.
