Abstract

1,227,362. Bearings; shaft seals. R. YATES. 7 July, 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 20797/68. Headings F2A and F2B. A bearing for a rotary shaft, e.g. a ship's propeller shaft, is sealed by providing at each end of the bearing annular chambers 21, 34 in which are located axially slidable annular plungers 22, 35 which bear against members 28 and 37 which are secured to the shaft, hydraulic fluid being supplied to the annular chambers and maintained at such a pressure that the annular plungers are held in sealing contact with the members 28 and 37. The propeller shaft 10 is journalled in a bearing 11 in a stern tube 12 which is supported by a stern frame 13 and a bulk-head 14. At each end of the stern tube are provided members 18, 19, 31 and 34 which define the annular chambers 21 and 34 in which the annular plungers slide. Fluid is supplied from a tank 46 to each of the chambers, the height of the tank being such as to produce a pressure in the chambers greater than the head of a column of water of a height equivalent to at least the head of water at the stern tube at maximum draft of the vessel. Packing rings 23 39 are provided in the chambers. The plungers, are forced into sealing contact with the plates 27 and 36 which are secured to and rotate with the shaft. Lubricant is supplied to the bearing from a tank 47, the tank being at a lower level than that for the hydraulic fluid, so that the pressure of hydraulic fluid is greater than that of lubricant.
