A travelling cylinder printing machine comprises a fixed printing plate and a movable impression cylinder 1, separated from the plate 8 by a gap a. The cylinder 1 is rotatably mounted on an eccentric 5, carried by a shaft 2, and the gap a may be adjusted by rotation of the shaft 2. Even rotation of the cylinder 1 is ensured, irrespective of size of the gap a, by driving the cylinder 1 by engagement of a travelling gear 10 mounted on shaft 2 with a stationary rack 11 and by engagement of an eccentric 14, carried on a pin 13 in gear 10, with cylinder 1. Shaft 2 is fast with a gear 15, and further gears 16, 17 cause the pin 13 to rotate in such a way that eccentric 14 rotates with a constant radius r m from the axis of cylinder 1. There are two gears 16, symmetrically offset from the line joining gears 15 and 17 and each engaging both. The gears 16 are of a plastics material, such as a phenol resin with paper or fabric, or of a polyamide.
