A woven or knitted fabric is constructed of yarns at least some of which contain or consist of melt coloured polyester staple fibres and at least some of which contain or consist of polyester staple fibres of at least 25% shrinkage. The melt coloured polyester fibres and the shrinkable fibres may be present in the same yarn. In an alternative embodiment, the shrinkable fibres are the melt coloured polyester fibres. A process for producing a woven or knitted fabric having a coloured pattern comprises weaving or knitting a fabric from yarns containing melt coloured polyester staple fibres of at least 25% shrinkage blended with uncoloured or white polyester staple fibres and/or wool or cellulosic fibres, and from yarns containing low shrinkage melt coloured or dyed polyester staple fibres.
