Abstract
1,226,539. Printing - apparatus. BURROUGHS CORP. 6 Dec., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 55444/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions B2 and G2] Apparatus adapted to produce simultaneously a relief printing member and an intaglio printing member comprises a member 10, Fig. 1, of plastics material which is solid throughout except for the provision of a multicellular surface 20 of individual cells each initially filled with a material (25), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and an assembly 40 coupled to the member 10 at a common edge 11 and including an original sheet 42 provided with a thermoplastic coating 45 of a material having a latent specific affinity for the material (25). Infra-red absorbent indicia (64), Fig. 4 (not shown), applied to the uncoated side of the original 42 are heated differentially with respect to the rest of the apparatus by a source (62), Fig. 6 (not shown), with the coating 45 in contact with the member 10. The coating 45 is softened in image-formation and on separation from the member 10 removes material (25) from selected cells in image areas 15 to produce from the member 10 an intaglio plate, the material (25) removed from the cells being bonded to the coating 45 to produce a relief plate having a raised image 15<SP>1</SP>. Both image areas 15, 15<SP>1</SP> comprise a multiplicity of minute protuberances (46), Fig. 4 (not shown). The original' 42, may be of thin lightweight paper or of synthetic plastics material and the indicia (64) may be replaced by writing, pictures or designs, the image being always infra-red absorbing, for example it may contain carbon or metallic pigment. Suitable materials for the coating 45 are stated to be polyvinylacetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, homo- and co-polymers of polyvinyl and polyvinylidene chloride, and ethyl cellulose. The material (25) is selected to withstand exposure to fluid ink and wiping by doctor blades. It is thixotropic and may be thermosetting or thermoplastic. A fused vinyl plastisol is stated to be preferred and this is doctored across the member 10 which is advantageously formed of polypropylene or cellulose acetate. The relief printing surface may be used as a marking stamp. The member 10 may be in the form of a sheet, cylinder or belt.
