In a vehicle identification system in which a column and row array of reed switch elements 11-19 at the trackside detects the position of magnets 1-3 arranged in selected positions, coded in dependence on the vehicle number, in a corresponding array of positions on the vehicle, each reed switch, e.g. 12, is associated in the detector array with a magnet 12<SP>1</SP> disposed with its direction of magnetization opposite to that of the next adjacent column and row magnets 11, 13<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP> and each magnet, e.g. 2, in the coded array on the vehicle has the same direction of magnetization as its corresponding magnet 2<SP>1</SP> in the detector array and thus opposite to a next adjacent magnet in the coded array if present. The magnets may be permanent or electromagnets and the reed switches are provided with polepieces of larger cross-sectional area than the switch contacts. Means (not shown) are provided for sensing the signals produced by operation of the reed switches when the positions of the arrays correspond.
